Global Covid-19 vaccination campaign is humanity’s greatest logistical challenge

More than 159 million doses have been administered in 76 countries. When will life return to normal? This is a complicated question and the subject of debate among epidemiologists. Vaccinating roughly 70% to 85% of a country’s population would enable a return to normalcy.

On a global scale, that is a daunting level of vaccination. Globally, the latest vaccination rate is 5,803,044 doses per day, on average. At this rate, it will take an estimated 5.4 years to cover 75% of the population with a two-dose vaccine. Current vaccines require two doses for full protection.

With the start of the global vaccination campaign, countries have experienced unequal access to vaccines and varying degrees of efficiency in getting shots into people’s arms. Israel’s rate of inoculations dwarfs the efforts of other nations, with 68.0 doses administered for every 100 people.

Most countries have not yet given their first shots. Delivering billions of vaccines to stop the spread of Covid-19 worldwide will be one of the greatest logistical challenges ever undertaken.
