Minimum speed limits are set to be implemented on Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Road.
General Ahmed Saif bin Zaytoun Al Muhairi, director of Abu Dhabi Police’s Central Operations Sector, stated that the minimum speed on the first and second lanes from the left will be 120kph, while the maximum speed will remain at 140kph.
Drivers who exceed 120kph on the first two lanes of the four-lane highway connecting Abu Dhabi and Dubai will be fined Dh400.
“The goal of the low-speed activation is to ensure driver safety by requiring slow vehicles to move to the right lanes and always make way for vehicles coming from behind or from the left,” said Gen Al Muhairi.
Police confirmed that the third lane, which has a speed limit of 140kph, and the last lane for heavy vehicles will not have any minimum speed violations. The new rules go into effect in April, and the application of fines begins on May 1.
