Logistics opening up for women

Sue Donoghue, CEO Arab Cluster and Managing Director, Saudi Arabia, DHL Global Forwarding.

The logistics sector is traditionally male dominated. Sue would however encourage women to follow her lead and take up a career in logistics. The industry is more open now than it was when she started as there are more opportunities for women to take on different career paths and grow in leadership roles. There is still a way to go but there are a lot more initiatives and support for women to come in and get to Board level.

Sue looks after Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Kuwait markets. She is present with the Group’s Middle East board. Her responsibilities include profit and loss management and developing, implementing the growth strategy for the cluster with a strong focus on the Saudi market.

Sue’s blend of empathy and respect for her team, coupled with her courage, desire to learn, and communication skills have enabled her to lead a dynamic and resilient team that is creating results in an unparalleled environment. Working at DHL Global Forwarding for the past 16 years, she feels aligned with the values and the culture of the organisation.

Sue’s career in forwarding might have started as a two-week placement 25 years ago. But being strategic about growth led her to this moment and place in her career. No two days are the same. You can be accountant, logistics, trouble-shooter, business development, sales. Very quickly she saw that this was a multifaceted job that soon gets under your skin.

The pandemic has created a dramatically different global business environment over the past two years. The slowdown of supply chains, limited freight capacity by many providers, and work-from-home mandates in countries around the world, are some of the current challenges Sue faces.
